Ferrero into semifinals in Brazil Open
COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil — Top-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero reached the semifinals of the Brazil Open, defeating Carlos Berloq of Argentina 6-3, 6-2 on Friday.
In another quarterfinal of the outdoor clay-court tournament, third-seeded Igor Andreev of Russia beat sixth-seeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-1, 6-1.
Four second-round matches were played early Friday after being washed out by rain on Thursday.
Third-seeded Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 6-4, 6-2. Brazil’s Richard Mello won 7-5, 6-3 over fifth-seeded Victor Hanescu of Romania. Lukasz Kubot of Poland defeated second-seeded Albert Montanes of Spain 6-2, 6-2. Fabio Fognini of Italy came back to beat Marcel Granollers of Spain 0-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1).
