Top world surfers in No. Cal for big wave event

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — A major California surf contest is taking shape Saturday with possible record-breaking tall waves.

But the celebrated surfing event featuring 24 of the world’s best surfers is occurring for the first time in its 11-year-history without founder and surfing legend Jeff Clark.

He is embroiled in a legal dispute with the company that now runs the contest and accuses Mavericks Surf Ventures Inc. of selling out for commercial gain

Mavericks chief executive Keir Beadling says the allegations are false but has declined to discuss the suit any further.
