Vancouver (GaeaTimes.com) — People around the world are now enjoying Winter Olympics at Vancouver. They are interested in many events, but the event that is catching most of the attention is Curling. People are hunting over Internet for the rules of the game. Let’s delve into what’s Curling actually is.
Curling has been an official sport in the Winter Olympic Games since the 1998 Winter Olympics. The game was originated in Scotland in the early 16th century.
Curling is played on a rectangular sheet of prepared ice by two teams of four players each. Curling target is called ‘house’, comprising of concentric rings. Heavy polished granite stones are used by each team to slide down the ice towards the house. Points are scored for every curling stone that a team has placed closer to the center of the target than the closest of the opponent team’s stones. The scoring goes like, team A has curling stone closest to the center, hence gets one point, closest two gets two points and son on. The team that scores the first point gets the chance to throw first in the next round. Curling is sometimes referred to as “chess on ice” due to its complex nature and the strategy one requires to win the game.
Outside Olympic, curling is played at club levels. Though there are some added rules for playing curling in curling club, the basic nature remains the same. Curling club applies an unique process for maintaining perfect ice conditions, which is most important for playing curling.
