Virginia’s Monica Wright wins ACC player of year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia’s Monica Wright has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s player of the year one day after also winning the league’s defensive honor.

Wright led the ACC by averaging 23 points and 3.6 steals, was second in free-throw percentage and accounted for six of the 10 30-point games by league players this season.

She scored a career-high 39 points at Boston College on Jan. 21, and will finish her career as the No. 3 scorer in the history of ACC women’s basketball.

Now, Wright hopes to lead the Cavaliers on a journey deep into postseason play.

The postseason road begins Friday when the third-seeded Cavaliers play either sixth-seeded North Carolina State or 11th-seeded Clemson in the conference tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
