Smith throws 4 sharp innings, Rockies beat Dodgers

TUCSON, Ariz. — Left-hander Greg Smith threw himself into the chase for the final spot on the Colorado staff, pitching four shutout innings Tuesday in the Rockies’ 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Smith retired his first 10 batters. He gave up two hits, struck out four and walked none.

Smith hasn’t drawn a lot of attention in what had been described as a three-man competition between Tim Redding, Justin Speier and Joe Beimel. He was acquired from Oakland before the 2009 season in the trade for outfielder Matt Holliday, and was slowed by injuries and ailments last year at Triple-A.

Todd Helton hit a two-run homer off Dodgers pitching prospect Josh Linblom in the first inning.
