Tsonga rallies past Almagro at Barcelona Open
BARCELONA, Spain — Third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga rallied to beat Nicolas Almagro of Spain 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 Thursday at the Barcelona Open.
Joining Tsonga in the quarterfinals was eighth-seeded David Ferrer, who won all nine games before qualifier Simone Bolelli of Italy retired with a right wrist injury.
Fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco rallied to beat Jurgen Melzer of Austria 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3.
Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2001 Barcelona winner, lost his match against Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (4).
Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil stopped Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, 6-4, 6-4 and qualifier Eduardo Schwank of Argentina defeated Ivan Navarro, Spain, 6-3, 7-6 (7).
Ernests Gulbis of Latvia topped Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 6-1, 6-3.
Tsonga, making his debut in Barcelona, also defeated Almagro at the Australian Open and in Monte Carlo last week.
