Reynolds leads Diamondbacks past Phillies 8-6
PHOENIX — Mark Reynolds hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning and finished with three hits, including a three-run homer, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-6 on Sunday.
Reynolds had a season-high four RBIs and Chris Young added three hits for Arizona, including two doubles. The Diamondbacks tied a season high with 15 hits, which also was the most allowed by the Phillies this year.
Chad Qualls worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save in six attempts.
Reynolds’ clutch hit off David Herndon (0-1) gave Arizona the series win after losing three straight sets. Kelly Johnson hit his fourth homer of the series and Leo Rosales (2-0) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the victory.
Greg Dobbs hit a two-run homer and Carlos Ruiz drove in two runs for the Phillies.
Stephen Drew led off the Arizona eighth with a single to right and was thrown out by shortstop Wilson Valdez when he tried to score on Cole Gillespie’s double down the left-field line.
Reynolds then hit a line drive that bounced just in front of the wall in right. After Adam LaRoche was walked intentionally, Young tacked on an RBI single to make it 8-6.
Arizona rallied after starter Rodrigo Lopez surrendered six runs and 10 hits over six innings. John Hester tied it at 6 with an RBI double in the seventh.
Kyle Kendrick allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings for Philadelphia. It was his fourth no-decision in four starts this year.
The Phillies scored three runs in the sixth to take the lead for the second time in the game. Chase Utley scored on Jayson Werth’s sacrifice fly and Ruiz’s two-run single made it 6-5.
Arizona erased a 3-0 deficit with five runs in the fifth inning. Johnson hit a two-run drive for his seventh homer and Reynolds connected for his seventh, leaving them tied for the team lead.
Johnson has one fewer than he had in 106 games with Atlanta last season.
Dobbs sent the sixth pitch of the game into the right-field stands for his first homer since July 6.
Arizona star Justin Upton fouled a ball off his left shin in the fifth inning. He remained in the game after drawing a walk but was replaced by Gillespie in right field in the top of the sixth.
