GUANGZHOU - India’s Krishna Poonia bettered her gold winning throw at the Commonwealth Games but it could only win her a bronze in the women’s discus throw event at the Asian Games here Tuesday.

Krishna, who came on top in Delhi with a throw of 61.51 metres, produced 61.94m but had to settle for the third place. She also won a bronze at the Doha edition of the Asiad four years ago.

Chinese Yanfeng Li (66.18m) and Aimin Song (64.04m) won the gold and silver, respectively, at the Aoti Main Stadium.

Another Indian in the fray, Harwant Kaur was nowhere near her Commonwealth Games performance and finished fourth with a 57.55m throw. Harwant bagged the silver last month in Delhi with a throw of 60.61m.

Krishna produced her best performance of the day in her very first attempt. She had four opportunities to come closer to the Chinese but the 29-year-old from Rajasthan could only manage 61.13m, 58.55m and 59.79m. Her fifth attempt was disqualified.

Harwant’s best throw came in her second attempt. She tried too hard and in the process committed two fouls.
