Suspect in lax killing once deemed ‘unflappable’

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of fatally beating a player on the school’s women’s team this week was once described by his high school coach as easygoing and unflappable.

George Huguely’s coach at the Landon School in Bethesda, Md., described him in 2006 as a prankster whose lighthearted attitude helped make him a leader.

Now Huguely is charged with murdering fellow 22-year-old Yeardley Love. Police say he kicked in her bedroom door and that her head repeatedly hit a wall as they struggled. Huguely’s lawyer says it was an accident.

Students at the university in Charlottesville planned to pause from studying from finals for a memorial service Wednesday night. The highly ranked men’s and women’s teams have decided to go ahead and play in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
