Australia beat England on boundary countback

ST KITTS - In a dramatic ending, Australia overcame defending champions England through boundary countback to 6’s after both teams were locked in a tie following the regulation time and the Super Over in the Women’s World Twenty20 here.

Chasing a modest 104 Wednesday, Australia needed eight off the last over with a wicket in hand but a no-ball from England captain Charlotte Edwards was sent to the fence and Rene Farrell was run out by Beth Morgan with the scores level and three balls remaining.

In the Super Over, both sides scored 6-2 but Australia won on countback because they hit the match’s only six, courtesy Jess Cameron who took the aerial route off Holly Colvin.

Australian captain Alex Blackwell said it was a “deserving” win.

“It was an extremely tense game but I am proud of the way we bowled and in the end I think we deserved our victory.”

An understandably disappointed England head coach Mark Lane said: “We’ve had a few trial runs at the Super Over, so we were quite clear on how it was going to work, but unfortunately we were run out.

“We are disappointed, but we didn’t lose the game on the Super Over, we lost it with the bat in the first innings.”
