Germany beats US 2-1 in OT before record crowd
GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany — Felix Schutz scored 21 seconds into overtime to give Germany a 2-1 win over the United States in front of a record ice hockey crowd in the opening game of the world championship Friday.
Schutz tapped home a pass from Constantin Braun just inside the blue line to send the fans into a frenzy, though they had to wait for a video review to determine whether Schutz was in the crease.
The attendance of 77,803 in soccer’s Veltins Arena broke the record of 74,544 fans who saw a U.S. college game in 2001 at East Lansing, Mich.
Michael Wolf scored Germany’s opener five minutes into the second period.
Ryan Carter tied it with 11:32 remaining in the game, the first in Group D, which also includes Finland and Denmark.
The U.S. plays Denmark on Monday and Germany takes on Finland.
