Mickelson makes a charge, Tiger does not

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Phil Mickelson has given himself a chance at No. 1 in the world with a strong round at The Players Championship that might put him into contention.

Tiger Woods wound up going nowhere.

Mickelson got within two shots of leader Lee Westwood on Saturday until going over the 18th green and making his only bogey in a round of 66. He was three behind Westwood, who had yet to tee off.

Woods was poised to at least stay in the picture until bogeys on the last two holes for a 71. He was five shots behind Mickelson, and left the TPC Sawgrass eight shots behind Westwood.
