Power has fastest lap at Indy 500 practice
INDIANAPOLIS — Points leader Will Power has turned the fastest lap at Indianapolis 500 practice, hours before Pole Day qualifying is to begin.
Power, fifth in last year’s race, had a fast lap of 227.646 mph for Penske Racing on Saturday morning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Alex Tagliani was second at 227.513 mph, Penske’s Ryan Briscoe was third at 226.829 and 2008 Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon was fourth at 226.570.
Last year’s Indy 500 winner, Penske’s Helio Castroneves, was ninth at 225.956. The three-time pole winner and race winner has been among the fastest in practice all week.
The top 24 spots, including the polesitter, are to be determined Saturday afternoon. The final nine spots for the May 30 race will be determined Sunday.
