After 30: Germany leads Australia 2-0

DURBAN, South Africa — Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose scored for Germany inside the first 30 minutes to give the three-time champion a 2-0 lead over Australia.

Germany dominated the early action and Podolski scored with a searing left-footed shot in the eighth minute of the Group D match, after Klose and Mesut Oezil had their drives stopped by Australia’s defense.

Australia’s goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer was beaten by Podolski’s fierce shot under the crossbar despite getting his hand on it.

Podolski and Klose wasted more chances until Klose rose to head in a cross after 26 minutes for his 11th World Cup goal.
