One streak over, Westwood seeks major breakthrough

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Lee Westwood put an end to one big drought. Next, he’ll try to stop another.

The world’s third-ranked player won on the PGA Tour last week for the first time since 1998. Fresh from the victory at the St. Jude Classic, Westwood comes to the U.S. Open in hopes of shedding the title “Best Player to Never Win a Major.”

He has come close frequently in the past three years, finishing second at this year’s Masters, third in the last two majors of last year and third at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

But he says he feels no external pressure, only the pressure he puts on himself. Speaking of which, when he tees off Thursday afternoon, his threesome will include Ernie Els and Tiger Woods.
