Chile takes 1-0 halftime lead against Honduras

NELSPRUIT, South Africa — Jean Beausejour gave Chile a 1-0 halftime lead against Honduras in the opening match of Group H at the World Cup.

Chile had the bulk of the possession and chances in the first half, with Beausejour breaking through in the 34th minute off Mauricio Isla’s cross.

Matias Fernandez threatened the Honduras goal as early as the second minute with a free kick that curled just over the crossbar after playmaker Jorge Valdivia was fouled by Wilson Palacios 30 yards from goal.

Carlos Pavon had the first chance for Honduras, shooting wide of the right post from the edge of the box in the 18th minute.

The 43,000-capacity Mbombela Stadium was about three-quarters full at halftime.
