Switzerland leads Spain 1-0 after 60 minutes
DURBAN, South Africa — Switzerland was leading 1-0 against tournament-favorite Spain after 60 minutes of their World Cup match Wednesday following Gelson Fernandes’ goal in the 52nd minute.
Fernandes raced onto a loose ball to score into the open goal as the Swiss went ahead on their second chance of the game.
Spain had dominated possession until then but struggled to break through Switzerland’s defense with Andres Iniesta creating most of the chances for the European champion.
Gerard Pique had Spain’s best opportunity in the 24th minute but goalkeeper Diego Benaglio smothered his shot.
Fernandes scored after Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas cleared the ball straight off Pique into the area.
