Uruguay leads South Africa 1-0 after 60 minutes
PRETORIA, South Africa — Uruguay has had several chances in the opening 15 minutes of the second half to add to Diego Forlan’s long-range goal against South Africa at the World Cup on Wednesday.
The striker’s shot from 25 yards clipped South Africa defender Aaron Mokoena before dipping over goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and under the crossbar in the 24th minute to give Uruguay a 1-0 lead at Loftus Versfeld.
Uruguay came close to doubling its lead after halftime, but Edinson Cavani was unable to steer home a low cross. Teammate Diego Lugano missed an open header from eight yards.
South Africa’s Kagisho Dikgacoi will miss the final group game against France after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament.
