Mexico, Uruguay at 0-0 after 15 minutes
RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Mexico and Uruguay were in attacking mode in the opening stages of their final group stage match in the World Cup, but the score was 0-0 after 15 minutes Tuesday.
Both Group A teams need only a draw to qualify for the round of 16, and there had been speculation they would play cautiously.
Mexico got off to a good start with defensive midfielder Rafael Marquez blasting a shot well wide within the first 30 seconds.
Uruguay right back Maximiliano Pereira shot a free kick over the crossbar from about 30 yards in the sixth minute. Moments later, Uruguay forward Luis Suarez latched onto a long pass the defense failed to clear and his shot from the right side went across the face of goal.
