Uruguay leads Mexico 1-0 after 60 minutes
RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Uruguay forward Luis Suarez gave his team a 1-0 lead against Mexico, putting the Uruguayans on the brink of qualifying for the next round of the World Cup after 60 minutes Tuesday.
Suarez headed in from close range in the 43rd minute off a brilliant cross by Edinson Cavani. Both Group A teams need only a draw to advance, so the pressure is on Mexico to search for an equalizer. Mexico can still go through depending on the result of the France-South Africa match.
Both teams were in attacking mode despite prematch speculation they would play cautiously.
Mexico’s best chance came in the 22nd minute when winger Andres Guardado’s shot from 30 yards rattled the crossbar.
Uruguay had a chance to make it 2-0, but Oscar Perez saved one shot and another was blocked in the 54th.
