Uruguay leads Mexico 1-0 in WCup
RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Luis Suarez gave Uruguay team a 1-0 lead against Mexico just before halftime Tuesday in their final World Cup group match, putting his team on the brink of qualifying for the next round.
Suarez headed in from close range in the 43rd minute off a long cross.
Both teams need only a draw to advance, so the pressure will be on Mexico to search for an equalizer in the second half.
The teams were in attacking mode for most of the first half despite prematch speculation they would play cautiously.
Mexico’s best chance came in the 22nd minute when winger Andres Guardado’s shot from 30 yards rattled the crossbar.
