England 1-0 up against Slovenia at halftime
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa — Jermain Defoe’s 23rd-minute one-timer has given England a 1-0 lead against Slovenia at halftime of the teams’ final World Cup group match.
Defoe knocked in James Milner’s cross from close range as England chases the victory it needs to advance to the round of 16.
Captain Steven Gerrard had the best chance to double England’s lead but his side-footed attempt in the 30th minute was saved by Slovenia’s goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
Slovenia had the best chance of the early exchanges when midfielder Valter Birsa cut in from the left in the seventh minute but his shot was saved easily by goalkeeper David James.
England needs a win to guarantee advancing while surprise Group C leader Slovenia only needs a draw to sure of moving on.
