Ghana leads US 2-1 in extra time at World Cup
RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Asamoah Gyan has scored at the start of the 30-minute extra time to give Ghana a 2-1 lead over the United States in their World Cup second-round match.
Gyan hooked a left-footed shot into the roof of the net in the 93rd minute. Gyan caught up to Andre Ayew’s long ball and maintained his balance while outmuscling American defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Jay DeMerit before shooting.
Kevin-Prince Boateng had put Ghana ahead in the 5th minute with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. But Landon Donovan tied it with a 62nd-minute penalty kick after Clint Dempsey was fouled in the area by Jonathan Mensah.
The winner will meet Uruguay in the quarterfinals Friday.
