Paraguay-Japan penalty kicks shootout
PRETORIA, South Africa — How the penalty kicks shootout between Paraguay and Japan played out in the World Cup’s second round Tuesday:
1-0 Paraguay: Edgar Barreto beats Eiji Kawashima with a shot to the lower left of the net as the keeper dives the opposite way.
1-1 Japan: Yasuhito Endo sends a right-footed shot to the right corner as keeper Justo Villar guesses wrong.
2-1 Paraguay: Lucas Barrios does not fool Kawashima, but the shot still goes into the lower right of the net.
2-2 Japan: Makoto Hasebe puts a right-footed shot high to the right and over the diving goalkeeper.
3-2 Paraguay: Cristian Riveros scores with a right-footed shot low to the right as Kawashima dives the wrong way.
3-2 Japan: Yuichi Komano sends his right-footed shot off the crossbar.
4-2 Paraguay: Nelson Valdez stares down Kawashima, then puts a blistering right-footed shot to the upper right corner.
4-3 Japan: Keisuke Honda, Japan’s set piece specialist, sends a well-placed left-footed drive into the middle as Pillar stumbles.
5-3 Paraguay: Oscar Cardozo wins the shootout with a left-footed shot to the low left corner of the net.
