Spain, Portugal level at 0-0 after 1st half
CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Spain and Portugal are tied 0-0 after the first half of their round of 16 World Cup match, with the Spaniards creating the best chances.
Portugal goalkeeper Eduardo was called into action early, denying Fernando Torres and David Villa twice after good work by Spain down the left side.
Spain controlled possession, but was nearly caught on the break in the 21st minute. Iker Casillas punched away a Tiago shot and then had to clear it off his line ahead of the hard-charging Hugo Almeida.
Cristiano Ronaldo then had a dipping free kick well saved by Casillas in the 28th minute.
The match slowed late in the half, with Spain unable to make the final pass when it was attacking and Portugal happy to sit back and look for counterattack chances.
