Netherlands, Uruguay tied 1-1 at halftime
CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Diego Forlan scored on a long-range shot to pull Uruguay into a 1-1 tie with the Netherlands at halftime of their World Cup semifinal Tuesday.
Forlan curled a shot from 25 yards in the 41st minute that Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg couldn’t keep out despite getting a hand on it.
Forlan’s fourth World Cup goal canceled out one of the best shots of the tournament — from Dutch defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
The 35-year-old Netherlands captain lashed a 30-yard shot with his left foot into the top corner in the 18th minute, capping a fine series of passes in the Dutch midfield.
The winner meets either Germany or Spain in the final at Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium on Sunday.
