GANGTOK - A soccer club in Sikkim is providing a platform for hundreds of enthusiasts of the game.
The Denzong Boyz Football Club was created in 1930 by a bunch of football-lovers who hailing from various professions such as engineering, medicine, social and charitable works, sports and teaching.
“Our motive of forming Denzong Boyz was to give a platform to the players who are struggling outside Sikkim, as well as some place at international level also. But what we have seen is that they are not getting a chance to play, though good clubs of India recruits them,” Tsewang Jigmee Lachungpa, Manager, Denzong Boyz Football Club.
The club depends on self-contributions and sponsorships from small companies. It has some foreign players who play during local tournaments.
Players, however, feel that it is a tough job promoting the game in a cricket-mad nation.
“Now there are not many clubs that offer good money to players. They choose government jobs because they are more reliable than playing football,” Tenzing Chopel, a player. (ANI)
