Uruguay, Germany at 1-1 after 30 minutes
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa — Uruguay and Germany are tied 1-1 after 30 minutes of the third-place playoff Saturday.
Thomas Mueller’s fifth goal of the World Cup gave Germany a 1-0 lead at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium when he swept home a rebound after Bastian Schweinsteiger’s swerving shot was blocked by Fernando Muslera.
Edison Cavani hit back for Uruguay in the 28th minute when he broke clear and slid a shot past Hans Joerg Butt.
Defender Arne Friedrich hit the crossbar with a header off a 10th-minute corner as Germany dominated the early stages.
Forward Diego Forlan then had a 25th-minute header blocked by the back of Per Mertesacker as Uruguay fought back.
