Galle Test: Sangakkara, Paranavitana put Sri Lanka in command against India

GALLE - Centuries from Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara and opening batsman Tharanga Paranavitana put the hosts in control at the end of Sunday’s opening day of the first Test against India in Galle.
Sangakkara (103) and Paranavitana (110 not out) shared a second-wicket stand of 181 to help Sri Lanka reach 256-2, before bad light ended play with 22 overs still to be bowled.
It was Sangakkara’s 22nd Test century, while the maiden one for Paranavitana.
The skipper was eventually caught at midwicket off the bowling of Virender Sehwag.
Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (25 from 24 balls) was the only other batman to be dismissed in the day when he was caught behind off debutant fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun in the morning session.
Indian off-spinners Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha struggled throughout the day, as both finished without any success in their 17 overs.
Paranavitana and Mahela Jayawardene (eight not out) were at crease when rain brought an early end to the day’s play after 68 overs.
