Bombay High Court defers Hockey India elections by three weeks

MUMBAI - The Bombay High Court on Wednesday came down heavily on the Central Government for not complying with its order regarding recognition of Hockey India and issued an order to stay the elections for three weeks.
Vijendra Jabra, the lawyer of the Mumbai Hockey Association (MHA), said a stay has been granted on the elections scheduled in New Delhi, as Hockey India has violated the High Court’s earlier orders.
“The court will hear the matter in due course,” he added.
Despite the High Court’s order that Hockey India is a private body and Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) is the only recognised body of the sport, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said that both IHF and Hockey India are recognised bodies.
Earlier on Tuesday, the High Court said the Government should not associate itself with the elections of Hockey India, as it is a private body and held that the IHF is the only recognised body for the sport in the country.
The court had on May 21 ruled that both the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Sports Ministry did not follow procedures set in their Constitution while suspending and disaffiliating the IHF and, therefore, their action was illegal. (ANI)
