Indian boys in round of 16 of World Junior Squash

QUITO - India defeated Wales 2-1 to top pool D and entered the knockout stage of the World Junior Boys Squash team championships here.

The Indian team next meet the Netherlands in the pre-quarter-final round.

In the first singles Tuesday, Aditya Jagtap lost the opening game to David Haley who was willing to keep the ball in play.

In the second game, Haley led 8-3 but Jagtap was patient enough to tactically win points to clinch and level the match.

In the third game, once again David rushed off to a 5-0 lead after uncharacteristic errors from Jagtap. But Jagtap kept his cool to win the important game and thereafter the match.

Ramit Tandon sealed the victory for India with his classy array of drops to beat Sam Huxtable in straight games. In the dead rubber, Ravi Dixit conceded the match to Sam Fenwick at one-game all.

The results (India’s match): India bt Wales 2-1 (Aditya Jagtap bt David Haley 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6; Ramit Tandon bt Sam Huxtable 11-8, 11-7, 11-6; Ravi Dixit lost to Sam Fenwick 6-11, 11-7 (retd).
