Indiana horse track cancels races after complaints
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — Indiana Downs canceled harness races this week after complaints from horsemen about poor track conditions.
The track’s final race on Monday was canceled after a horse pulled up lame and was later euthanized. The track canceled Tuesday’s full card.
Indiana Standardbred Association president Jack Kieninger said horsemen blamed the horse’s injury on the track. He said the normal harness racing surface is much thinner after heavy rain.
Indiana Downs general manager Jon Schuster said he had no evidence that the track was at fault. Schuster said he was trying to address safety concerns and anticipated resuming races Thursday.
