Wozniacki says she deserves No. 1 seeding at Open
NEW YORK — Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki says she deserves to be seeded No. 1 for the U.S. Open, the first time she’s held the top spot at a Grand Slam tournament.
Speaking Sunday, a day before the start of the U.S. Open, Wozniacki says she doesn’t feel pressure, because “pressure is when you’re put on the spot and you don’t feel like you belong there.”
Wozniacki was the runner-up at Flushing Meadows last year and is the first woman since 2003 to be seeded No. 1 at the U.S. Open without already having won a major championship. Wozniacki is No. 2 in the rankings behind Serena Williams, who withdrew from the tournament with an injury.
Wozniacki has won 14 of her last 15 matches and two consecutive tournaments, including a title at New Haven, Conn., on Saturday.
