Hutarovich wins Spanish Vuelta 2nd stage
MARBELLA, Spain — Yauheni Hutarovich surged ahead of Mark Cavendish and Tyler Farrar to win the second stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday, taking the sprint finish in 4 hours, 35 minutes and 41 seconds.
A four-strong group broke away early in the 108-mile stage between Alcala de Guadaira and Marbella before being caught by the peloton. Hutarovich, riding for Francaise des Jeux, overtook two of the sport’s premier sprinters in the final yards to claim his first major stage win.
Cavendish went into the second stage as race leader following his HTC-Columbia team’s win in the first stage time trial Saturday in Seville.
The British rider keeps the leader’s jersey for Monday’s 97-mile stage to Malaga.
