AHMEDABAD - Slamming the central government over the mess in the upcoming Commonwealth Games, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that even if Prime Minister Manmohan Singh starts wiping the floor, the venues won’t be ready for the game.

Addressing a gathering during the inauguration of a civil hospital here, Modi said that the union government doesn’t seem to be interested in development. They just seem to be interested in Commonwealth Games…now the Prime Minister himself has to carry out the mopping up of the venues, but nothing will happen.”

He further said that hosting the Games was not something to be proud of.

“Commonwealth Games, it is shameful and not a thing to be very proud of. The Prime Minster is doing the mopping up, but it is of no use now,” Modi said.

The event has been marred by charges of rampant corruption, dubious contracts and poor workmanship.

Several civil society groups and forums have also questioned the quality of the infrastructure developed for the event, claiming that the authorities have done shoddy and poor preparation of the venues.

India is expecting about two million tourists in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states, which will be held from October 3 to 14.

The 12-day extravaganza will be India’s biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games. (ANI)
