NEW DELHI - ‘Green’ Sheras, the Games mascot, will greet visitors at the Commonwealth Games venues - with leaves springing out of their wire mesh structures - giving a literal touch to the concept of green Games.
Besides Shera, the Games logo will also go green.
According to a government official, 12 Sheras and 12 Games logos fashioned in the green way, besides 17 signage boards, will be put up at the Games venues and major locations.
A team comprising officials of the Delhi government and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were trained in Japan in the special horticulture technique.
The School of Planning and Architecture was asked to help with the drawings, the central government asked to provide the iron wire mesh structures, while TERI was tasked to provide the plants of uniform growth.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit along with MCD Commissioner K.S. Mehra, after visiting the Rajiv Gandhi Smriti Van in east Delhi to inspect the greenery and mosaic designs, said that the wire mesh structures have different varieties of plants.
She also instructed the officials to put up lights beneath the sculptures to make them look more attractive. The chief minister credited officials of the MCD and environment department besides the Delhi Park and Garden Society for the green art.
The chief minister hoped the structures would help people get to feel the ‘Green’ Games.
