QB Delhomme’s picks hurt Browns in opening loss

BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini joked last week that he was happy not to have to talk about any quarterback problems.

Jake Delhomme’s performance in the season opener has changed that.

Delhomme threw two interceptions, including a game-changing pick late in the first half on Sunday in the Browns’ 17-14 loss at Tampa Bay. With the Browns leading 14-3 and driving toward a possible score, Delhomme tried to sidearm a pass while falling and it was picked off by Ronde Barber and returned 64 yards.

It was not an ideal first start in Cleveland for Delhomme, who threw a career-high 18 interceptions last season at Carolina.

Mangini said Monday that Delhomme will undergo medical tests on his right ankle, which he “twisted up” in the first half. Mangini would not specify if Delhomme will undergo an MRI or X-rays.

He was limping during the second half, but afterward Delhomme said he was fine.
