NEW DELHI - There is a 15-20 percent likelihood of rain in Delhi during the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games, but there are no plans to prevent showers by any artificial methods, the India Meteorological Department said Tuesday.
The department said the chances of rains during the period is based on the climatological data for the past 110 years.
Speaking to reporters, IMD Director General Ajit Tyagi said there are no plans to prevent rains during the Games through any artificial methods.
Tyagi said a 4-tier system of weather forecast and information system has been planned for the Commonwealth Games where nowcasting - very short-range weather forecasting - will be used for the first time.
The weather conditions in and around Delhi will be monitored round the clock with the help of a network of 35 automatic weather stations installed in the region. “About a dozen manned observatories in the area have been strengthened to provide the observations every hour,” he added.
A state-of-the-art Doppler weather radar has been set has been in the capital for monitoring the development and movement of any cloud in the region.
The IMD will also provide venue-specific nowcasts round the clock during the Games.
