Iran defeat India to win Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship

KOLKATA - Favourites Iran displayed a scintillating performance to clinch the title in the third Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship against hosts India here on Monday at the Netaji Indoor Stadium.

The visitors won the game in straight sets defeating the hosts 25-19, 25-22 and 29-27 in a 90-minute encounter. India had also been defeated earlier on Saturday by Iran in the league stage of the championship.

A modest crowd had come to watch the final of the championship. From the start, the Indians failed to take initiative and went down 25-19.

The second game saw the hosts displaying some challenge to Iran but again losing 25-22.

In the third set, the hosts showed initial resistance by maintaining a lead of five points at one stage but eventually bowed down to Iran, who came from behind to win the set and take the title.
