Massachusetts beats Towson on the road 27-14
TOWSON, Md. — John Griffin ran for a team-high 118 yards and scored the game’s final touchdown as Massachusetts beat Towson 27-14 on Saturday night.
The Minutemen (4-1, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association) took an early 7-0 lead after a 1-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Hernandez in the opening quarter that capped a 12-play, 67-yard drive.
Towson scored on a 3-yard fumble recovery by Marcus Valentine and a 5-yard pass from Chris Hart to Alex Blake to take a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter.
After Caleb Violette’s 33-yard field goal pulled Massachusetts to within four points, the Minutemen went on an 11-play, 97-yard drive for a go-ahead touchdown just before halftime.
Massachusetts padded its lead with a 23-yard field goal from Violette early in the third quarter and a 5-yard touchdown run from Griffin as the Minutemen kept the Tigers (1-4, 0-2) off the board the rest of the way.
