LONDON - Ryder Cup hero Lee Westwood is focused on becoming world No 1 despite his failure to win one of the major golf championships.

Having helped Europe win the Ryder Cup, he will be playing this week at the Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews, where a finish inside the top two could see the 37-year-old become world No 1.

Westwood has just replaced Phil Mickelson as No.2 in world rankings, The Sun reports.

World No.1 Tiger Woods, who is out of form since his off-course scandals, hinted that he could soon be back to his best with nine birdies in 15 holes in his singles romp against Francesco Molinari at Celtic Manor.

Westwood said: “Hopefully Tiger will keep going. I want to be world No 1 and especially if it means taking on Tiger when he’s playing great. I want to improve and build up a real rivalry with the world’s greatest ever player.”

“As I get older I’m more analytical, positive and worldly wise. nd I’m more muscular and I’m stronger,” he said.

“So overtaking Tiger is the goal. I shall continue to organise my schedule so that I peak for the Majors and, hopefully, I’ll win one of those too. But I want Tiger playing well. If I get there it will be even better for that,” Westwood added. (ANI)
