LONDON - Manchester United who promised to confirm the future of Wayne Rooney Thursday, came out saying there were “no developments” on the matter.

England striker Rooney released a statement Wednesday saying that he would not be extending his existing contract, which expires in June 2012, because United’s ambitions did not match his own.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had stated the previous day that he did not know or understand why Rooney wanted to leave.

Ferguson met with United’s chief executive David Gill Thursday but in a statement, the club said there had been “no developments”.

“The outcome of those meetings will become clear in the near future,” the statement said.

“We are aware that there is intense public and media interest on the club at the moment, but there are no developments of note to report. In the meantime, fans are asked to be patient.”

Rooney’s statement had alerted the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid to his possible availability.
