VALENCIA - India’s Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi of Belarus fought hard but could not stop Scots Andy and Jamie Murray from clinching the 1,357,000 euros Valencia Open tennis doubles title 7-6(8), 5-7, 10-7.
The Scots were Sunday playing their first ATP World Tour doubles final together and just over a week after Jamie married Colombian Alejandra Gutierrez in his hometown of Dunblan.
The win fetched the Murrays 95,240 euros and 500 ATP points while it was 44,000 euros and 300 ATP points for Bhupathi and Mirnyi.
The Murrays, who were given a wildcard for the event, pulled off a keenly fought first set after saving one set point but slumped in the second after Bhupathi and Mirnyi broke Jamie in the 11th game to make it a set all.
The Scots prevailed in the match tie-break, closing out victory in one hour and 48 minutes.
It was also Andy’s first ATP World Tour doubles title, while Jamie captured his fifth career title.
