Asian Games weightlifting: Sudhir finishes sixth in 77kg

GUANGZHOU - Sudhir Kumar Chitradurga finished sixth in the men’s 77kg category of the weightlifting event at the 16th Asian Games here Tuesday.

Sudhir’s lifted an overall weight of 295kg.

North Korea picked up another weightlifting gold as Kum Chol Pang lifted a total of 348kg, 23 more than Kirill Pavlov of Kazakhsthan, who finished second in the 325kg category. The bronze also went to Kazakhstan with Dauren Shauyeteyev lifting 310kg.

The Indian was never in the race for a medal in the strong field. He managed 135kg in snatch and 160 kg in clean and jerk. He then went for 165 kg in the clean and jerk round in his third attempt but fumbled.

Sudhir won a bronze in the same category at the Delhi Commonwealth Games last month.

K. Ravi Kumar, the gold medallist in 69 kg Commonwealth Games, missed out on a podium finish Monday.

Chandrakant Dadu Mali will compete in the men’s 85kg and Monika Laishram Devi in women’s 69 kg Wednesday.
