Asian Games squash: Joshna, Dipika go down fighting in quarters

GUANGZHOU - India’s Dipika Pallikal lost to World no.1 Nicol David of Malaysia while her compatriot Joshna Chinappa went down to Low Wee Wern in the women’s singles quarter-finals of the squash competition at the Asian Games here Friday.

Dipika lost 3-1 to Nicol while Johsna lost 2-3 to World No.16 Low, also from Malaysia at the Asian Games Town Gymnasium.

Dipika, World No.36, stunned Nicol by winning the second set. But Nicol showed her class and bounced back in style to win the match 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4.

Joshna, ranked 37th, also made a good start by winning the first two sets against Low. But the Indian could not hold on to the lead and lost the next three sets and went down 11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 3-11.

India are assured of a bronze in the men’s singles as Saurav Ghoshal and Siddharth Suchde meet each other in the quarter-finals later in the day.
