SYDNEY - England won three cricket Test matches by margins of an innings for the first time away from home enroute to their 3-1 Ashes success.

On the other hand, Australia have lost three Tests by an innings margin for the first time in the same series - by an innings and 71 runs at Adelaide, by an innings and 157 runs at Melbourne and by an innings and 83 runs at Sydney.

England’s previous four instances of three wins by an innings margin in a Test series came against West Indies at Lord’s, Leeds and The Oval in 1957; against New Zealand at Lord’s, Leeds and Manchester in 1958 and against India at Nottingham, Leeds and The Oval in 1959.

England have won two consecutive Ashes series — by 2-1 in 2009 and 3-1 in 2010-11. The last instance when England had won two Ashes series in succession was in 1985 (3-1) in England and 1986-87 (2-1) in Australia.
