LONDON - Ravi Bopara has been called up to England’s 15-man World Cup squad as a replacement for injured Eoin Morgan.

Morgan has been ruled out of the two-month tournament after fracturing the middle finger of his left hand.

The 24-year-old had been an integral part of England’s one-day batting unit since he made his debut two years ago.

“Morgan is a serious loss to us. He has been a very influential limited overs performer for us since he joined the team, but Ravi Bopara is an exciting young cricketer in his own right. He also brings a little medium pace that will help the captain in the middle overs,” the Telegraph quoted England coach Andy Flower, as saying.

Meanwhile, captain Andrew Strauss believes that Bopara will be eager to assert himself again after a period out of the international set-up.

“Ravi hasn’t had a chance to play for us recently, but he has been playing a lot around the world. He is desperate to get back in the ranks and this is his chance,” Strauss said.

“We like what he can bring to the game with his bowling and his ability to clear the ropes will be vital. He’s a worthy addition to our squad,” he added.

Strauss’ men will fly out to Bangladesh on Saturday ahead of their World Cup opener against the Netherlands on February 22 in Nagpur. (ANI)
