Strauss’ Ashes-winning team receives just a ’single clap’ homecoming

LONDON - England captain Andrew Strauss and several members of the Ashes-winning team have returned home to a quiet reception.

The team was welcomed at London’s Heathrow Airport by an elderly man in front of a handful of supporters.

“Well played Andrew, well played,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted the man, as saying.

The muted celebrations were very different to the open-top bus parade following the 2005 Ashes victory, which had attracted tens of thousands of jubilant fans to Trafalgar Square.

Strauss, however, said that the reception was not important, as it is not why they play cricket.

“All of us that have been involved in Ashes cricket know how difficult it is to win in Australia and therefore the achievement is special, regardless of what you do once the series is over,” Strauss said. (ANI)
