Niners sign fifth-round pick Davis
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have signed fifth-round draft pick Nate Davis, giving the quarterback a four-year contract.
The team also announced Friday it has waived safety Lewis Baker.
Shaun Hill and Alex Smith will begin training camp next weekend competing for the starting quarterback job. Davis might become the fourth quarterback behind veteran backup Damon Huard.
The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Davis set school records at Ball State for touchdown passes (74), passing yards (9,233), passing attempts (1,124), pass completions (678), 250-yard passing games (20) and 300-yard passing games (9). His 74 career touchdown passes rank fifth in MAC history behind Chad Pennington and Ben Roethlisberger.
He is the fifth of seven San Francisco draft picks to sign.
