Jets G Faneca to miss Rams game with broken finger

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — New York Jets left guard Alan Faneca will miss the team’s preseason opener against the St. Louis Rams because of a broken finger.

Faneca didn’t practice with the team at Hofstra on Wednesday night because he injured the middle finger on his left hand earlier in the week. He said he broke it a few days ago and then aggravated it near the end of practice Tuesday at SUNY Cortland.

“One of the last couple of plays of practice, I really caught it,” Faneca said.

Faneca becomes the fifth starter who’ll miss the game against the Rams on Friday because of injury, joining center Nick Mangold (right knee), right tackle Damien Woody (head), cornerback Darrelle Revis (left hamstring) and nose tackle Kris Jenkins (left calf).

“It’s frustrating that it’s a finger that keeps you out of playing a football game,” Faneca said. “You take care of it and move on. But, it’s the first time we get to hit somebody else who I’m not looking across from every single day, so I have to wait another week to do that, so it is frustrating.”

Faneca, entering his second season with the Jets, said he would play if this were the regular season.

“We’re in training camp and you’ve got the time to do it right,” he said. “So you just do it and try to be out as little as possible and try to get back.”

Stanley Daniels will likely get the start in Faneca’s place, with Robert Turner starting at center and Wayne Hunter in for Woody at right tackle.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence in those guys,” quarterback Kellen Clemens said. “We shouldn’t miss a beat.”
